There was something different about the girl from a good pureblood family. She was different in many ways and it was all thanks to her little adventure over the winter holiday. The whole period of time just became this insane rush that left her feeling empty when she returned to her family afterwards. Unfortunately they had not stayed through the entire holiday, as her companion had to see his family. Or more like wanted to but Alice could have just stayed forever in those muggle museums, taking in the french culture and lifestyle. It was the place she saw herself running to for the summer and potentially for the rest of her life. Everything was perfect there and it was so far away from a place where people knew her family. Of course there were wizarding families in France that knew of the English families, so as long as she avoided them then she would be alright. Alice could fade into normally and ease out of the high stress lifestyle that she once lived. Upon her return to English she felt the harsh sting of what she had done. Her father was not pleased that she had missed so much and had royally screwed up his plans. His words were cruel but followed by the silent treatment from her family. A form of punishment that no longer affected Alice since she already felt dead to the family. At home she was merely a ghost of what she could have been. When she had been in France she had been full of life. Laughing with her companion and enjoying his company while forgetting the over hanging fact that she had a duty to her family. A duty that she never believed in but just now found the strength to run from. Now was the time for Alice to take control back for herself and it felt right.
Slowly she began to sever the ties that held her to the pureblood lifestyle by avoiding the girls that she once called friend. They didn't seem to notice or mind, instead they moved on as well. As she returned to school she spent more time alone in the library trying to make up for all of the classwork she missed last semester. It was an easy excuse to avoid her housemates. Alice made a conscious effort to have her remaining time at Hogwarts be less noticed. Keeping herself under the radar and away from prying eyes as she planned out her actual future. It was nice to plan out a career instead of becoming numb to the idea of a husband and children. With classes over for the day, Alice found herself at a cross roads for the afternoon. Days were growing longer and Alice wanted to be outside in the sun for just a moment. Quickly she dropped off her books in her room before retreating from the dark basement to be outside. It was still chilly but this time she remembered to wear her cape and scarf for warmth. It was a lovely day for February, no too cold and no threat of snow lingering in the air. She walked right out of the castle and passed a few people that paid her no mind. The end destination was clear the moment she stepped outside and towards the lake she went. Following the trail that lead from the castle down towards the shining waters. It was always quite there in the afternoon and secluded. Two things that appealed to Alice at the moment.
Eventually she reached the lake and stood there on the edge looking down into the water. It looked cold and for a moment she thought about jumping in to see how cold it could be, however the threat of creatures kept her feet safely planted on the ground. Perhaps if she had been drugged on the sleeping potions then she might have but she went without those. Her sleeping habits had gone back to their normal routines, which included about 3 hours every night. So long as nothing threw them off then she would remain sane. When summer came she could worry about improvements but for now she was content. A smile formed on her lips as she looked back out towards the horizon and felt the sun on her skin.

THE WINTER HOLIDAYS had been a bit of an adventure for Drew, and the Hufflepuff was far from complaining. While the wizard might state everyday was an adventure for him, it was still a step up from the normal holidays. Sure, Drew had done similar escapades with his friends but it was a bit different this time. Perhaps it was his companion, someone who it seems had never once crossed over the line in her life. It was fun to watch the Slytherin witch just let herself go. Drew felt confident in saying that he saw a side to the witch that very few people had probably ever seen during that holiday. He smiled to think back on it. Granted, they had done some things that Drew himself probably would have skimped out on. After all, museums were not his cup of tea, but he had gone for the witch, and that in itself had been worth it. They had spent the days and some parts of the night wandering the city, and when they had to stop stayed at his brother’s place. Peter had been surprised to receive word from his brother of his incoming guests, but he had been happy to host them.
It had all seemed to have ended far too quickly. Drew would have gladly brought the brunette home with him to the chaos of his home life, but they had both agreed that the witch needed to make an appearance at her own home, no matter the wish to contrary. However, Drew felt some reassurance that something had changed for the witch during their time together. Granted, that didn’t mean it had to end, Drew had picked up a quill during the rest of the break and just started penning missives to the pureblood witch. He had not expected to receive any in return as really it had been a spur of the moment thing, and he just continued with it. Even now when they were back at school, Drew had sent the Slytherin a few letters.
Granted, Drew had also held no reservations in greeting the witch or hanging out with her when he saw her. However, he had started to space those out now, especially since his NEWTs were just around the corner. The Hufflepuff was forcing himself to study more, as much as he would prefer not to. However, he knew he needed to have a certain score if he wanted to become an Auror, so there was not to consider.
So with a book in hand, Drew left the confines of the castle in search of something to dust some of the cobwebs from his mind or at least draw out some of the energy that was preventing him from focusing. His footsteps led her over the grounds in no certain path, eventually crossed over the lake. Spying a certain female, Drew crossed the distance between them before coming up behind her. He draped his arms around her, pulling her into a hug from behind, looking out at the lake over her shoulder.
“Looking to converse with the giant squid?” he asked with a light tone. He was far from being serious, considering the ice covering parts of the lake inhibited the squid from surfacing.

The letters that she had receive after the trip made home a little more bearable for the remainder of the vacation. They became this little light that she looked forward to whenever she heard the owl tapping at her window. Thankfully the owl was smart enough to come directly to her window instead of just dropping the letters at the front door, where upon their discovery by others would never make it to Alice. In the dead of night she would write him response letters and then eagerly send them out in the morning. It might have been a little much but she felt like she was going to go insane if she was forced to stay there and play her part of the family. Several times she expressed her need for freedom and that she didn't think she could just become numb to her world anymore. Especially not after seeing Paris. Her plan for the coming summer was to leave England for as long as she could and see the rest of Europe. She needed to taste that bit of freedom again but she still needed some lie to cover herself. Something to tell her parents so that they wouldn't question her true motives. Purebloods didn't just up and decide to travel the world unless there was something to hide. There was still some time but Alice knew that it had to be convincing.
With her attention lost in the pool of ice and water she did not hear the sound of footsteps approaching until she felt the warm embrace of arms around her body. She knew this hug and she welcomed it with no fights. There was no one around to see or report back home so she let herself get comfortable in his embrace. "Of course..." She teased. "How do you expect to pass your NEWTs without some understanding of the lovely squid language?" She maintained her teasing tone with her statement. Obviously speaking to squids was not apart of the NEWTs but the squid might be covered under the magical creatures topic. Alice slowly turned in his arms so that she was facing him and brought her blue eyes up to meet his. A smile on her lips. "Shouldn't you be studying right now? I know there are still several months until the test but if you want really good scores then don't you need to study?" Alice wished that she could get her tests over with but being a year behind Drew meant that she had another year to wait. Another year stuck at Hogwarts but next year she wouldn't have such a friend to confide in.
"So... I've made up my mind. Once this semester ends I am going to hop on a train and head back to Paris for a few days and then get on another train to Italy. From Italy I either want to travel north to Germany or west to Spain and Portugal." Alice needed a plan. She was the planning type. Really her plan had more detail, such as durations and train schedules, but those details were not important. "All I need now is an excuse to leave for the summer. My parents won't just let me travel on my own." She explained, hoping that maybe he had an idea. Her travel plans mostly stuck to Europe but once she could apparate then she planned to get overseas. Right now that idea was impossible since she didn't have muggle money to buy the plane tickets. Trains were cheap and Alice knew that she could sneak out enough money to live on for a little while. "Please tell me that you will join me for a weekend somewhere." Knowing that he would be busy with his own life she wasn't going to expect him to join her for the entire summer. But he was now her friend and she wanted to spend time with him.

“OH NO, I’VE BEEN terribly remiss in my studying!” Drew jested with a mock expression. “The squid language has completely escaped my outlines!” For as much as Drew jested and seemed irresponsible, the wizard was actually quite respectable when it came to his studies and other areas. He was just of the strong belief that his duties did not need to rule his life or his sense of humor. Perhaps it was a case of his upbringing that made him so relax, but he would never change a thing. It was quite hard to say how things would have changed with he hadn’t grown up the way he had. It was one of those odd philosophical debates that more often than not hurt his head rather than intrigued him. He was happier to let others debate such life revolving questions. “I guess I’m doomed to fail and have to spend another year here with you.”
That had been another minor issue at the back of Drew’s mind. He was not so vain to think that his presence had some profound effect over the Slytherin, but he worried how she would be in the coming term when he was gone. As far as he knew, she had not made any other friends aside from him that were outside her pureblood circle. Drew was a firm believer in friendships, and he felt she would need one in her final year, as the final year was often the most stressful. However, he could not force friendships on her and the best he decided he could do was just remain a constant in her life to the best of his abilities, and he had already started that. The letters were his solution, although he had not thought that far when he started writing.
He was thoughtful as she spoke of her summer plans. Unfortunately, he knew he could not follow along on this adventure. Real life was going to be knocking on his door, and he had to answer it. “Well, if you get in contact with Peter, he’ll be happy to help you out while you’re in Paris,” he stated. His brother had enjoyed the pair’s company over the break, and Drew thought Alice had gotten along well with Peter. However, it still remained her choice whether to do so, but Drew liked that she would have at least one connection while in the city.
“As to your family,” he mused, shifting his gaze from her azure eyes to sky as he thought for an excuse. “Extra credit for classes? Make-up assignments or prep work for the next term?” he offered up, dropping his gaze back to her face, with a shrug of his shoulders. It was frankly the best he could do. Even with that for an excuse, her parents could become suspicious, but most parents wanted their children to do well and with Alice’s lapse during the year it seem plausible. However, Drew didn’t expound on the details, since Alice could probably figure that out for herself. “And I’m sure I could probably get away for a weekend or two somewhere. If not, by the end of your travels I should have a place of my own you can crash at,” he stated with a smirk and wink.

Alice couldn't help but laugh as he continued to play along with the little joke about the squid language. No one really understood the giant squid and there was not much of a need, unless of course he planned to study magical creatures. A task that Alice never saw herself doing. But her imagination was running wild with so many ideas of what she could do. The role of wife seemed so dull in comparison to everything else. "Well don't worry. I am sure that they won't just fail you for your inability to speak with the squid. I don't that all career paths really require such an ability." She replied, trying to reassure him even though they all knew that it was a joke. "And I don't think your family would be too happy if you were at Hogwarts another year. Even though I think it would be fun to have you around." There she said it. Selfishly she wanted to have a friend around to keep her level headed and she feared what may happen once her seventh year rolled around. Obviously her reputation was stuck and nothing would change something so engrained in people. But to spend a year alone would be rather difficult. A year alone with nothing but day dreams to keep her on the new path she had set for herself.
After mentioning Paris and her summer plans she heard his offer and smiled. When they had been there she had quite liked Peter. He was a nice man and Alice thought it would be nice to visit with him again. Repay his kindness somehow. She thought offering to make dinner would be sufficient but then again she didn't know how to cook. "Thank you... I will send him an owl." Mentally adding it to her to due list. She wondered if it would be weird to see Peter without Drew since Drew was really the only thing that they had in common. Although years of speaking with strangers at parties had helped her ability to socialize with new people so she assumed that she could get through that aspect. Besides she wouldn't stay long. The world was waiting and she couldn't be stuck in Paris for the whole summer. And his excuse could be plausibly if only her parents would believe such things without actual proof. The trip would have to be more than just Alice's word. Other purebloods would have to be attending this trip.
"I doubt the whole extra credit thing would work. My parents would need proof from the professors and other students going. Its a good idea but it would be too hard to pull off." She explained. Alice ran her fingers through her hair and pulled it back out of her face so that they could speak. "I thought about using the excuse that I was going to do charity work in underprivileged countries but that would also require many details." Alice added but then just sort of looked down. "And I've been considering the idea of just leaving and not telling them. Running away and never returning back to their home." It was a bold idea but for some reason she couldn't shake it. And this was the first time that she honestly said it out loud. What was once a mere thought in her head was now a vocalized idea that could be considered more deeply.
But once he mentioned the idea of her crashing at his place, her mind instantly began to formulate more ideas. She could stay with Drew before her seventh year. "And I could really stay with you? You wouldn't mind?" Still dumb founded by the new ideas that clouded her mind. Alice Parker could give up her life of pureblood and live how she wanted. There was an escape plan that could actually work. The smile grew on her lips. A real smile full of happiness and excitement. Everything was falling into place.

The Hufflepuff cocked his head to the side as he murmured, “Hm,” before continuing, “thought perhaps your parents were more trusting of your word than mine of mine,” he stated with a small chuckle. It was a believable thing if the girl’s parents took her word at face value, as some parents tended to do. Granted, those were usually parents of straight and narrow students who never done any wrong, so why should they worry about their child lying to them? Now Drew’s mothers? Yeah, they weren’t likely to believe such a lie falling from their son’s lips. Drew had too many siblings, majority being boys, who liked to get away with shit. They kept the witches pretty well on their toes. However, it was worth a shot, as while Drew had an inkling of Alice’s relationship with her parents, he did not know exactly how it was. So, worth a shot, at least. Either that, or Alice just thought things far more thoroughly than Drew did—which, was also highly possible.
Shrugging his shoulders, “ I don’t see why not,” he stated to her inquiry. Drew knew he would have a place of his own come the summer. “ It’s not likely to be anything much or fancy,” he added. As after all the Hufflepuff would be living on his wages from the Ministry and starting out were not likely to be very large wages at that. Actually, to be honest, he would probably be living first off his own savings. He did not really want to accept any help from his parents, even though he was sure both would want to at least help—at least, they had when both Peter and Keith had flown the nest. Yet, Drew was never one to rely heavily on others, especially his family, if he knew he didn’t need to.
Truthfully, Drew was more worried that Alice would not really adjust well to such a drastic lifestyle change. It was one thing to say one was going to depart from their current lifestyle than to be thigh deep into it. There were comforts she’d be doing without, ones she may not even have thought of. However, these were all thoughts that Drew kept to himself. He had no way of knowing exactly how things would turn out until they finally came to pass.
