Her initial assessment had not been correct, which was surprising since Alice was generally a good judge of character at least when it come to those that she was familiar with. It would have been a sign of boldness had it been someone within her society but was just a sign of laziness to any average teenaged boy who did not feel the need to appeal to the norms of society. She did not judge him well since she did not understand the mind of the man sitting in front of her. To her a bold move and to him shear laziness prevented him from conjuring a mask to protect his face from his peers. The opinions could not have been more difference and Alice failed to extract the true information until he openly told her of his plans. "My apologies for interpreting your actions in the wrong manner." She replied. There was no need to apologize over something so unimportant but she just felt wrong about it for some reason. Maybe she should have apologized for making such ludicrous assumptions or for assuming anything at all.
"Yes...my apologies again but I grew up in a world where flattering comments were a thing of normality since as you can image people want to be well liked among the other families that they socialize with." It often created alliances between families and marriage was used as the ultimate seal for that alliance and it was common practice to use it for family gain. Sacrifice a member of the family for the greater good of the entire family and Alice saw herself on the sacrificial alter with her hand tied behind her back. All hope lost as the ceremonial knife was heading toward her heart, about to plunge down, and Alice was helpless at the moment. Playing the role of damsel in distress was not her sort of style but she could play the role if her father commanded it of her but he was not here to command things of her. In fact she had the power to set herself free from the things that bound her but instead she stayed and played the role of a prisoner who was trapped by her family name and family honor. It was harder to leave than one would expect since there was always the question of what would she do once she was gone.Truthfully she doubted that there would be anything for her on the other side but she could not stay any longer and await her inevitable sacrifice. There was no indication that he would stand by her or even befriend her but she at least placed her trust that he would not look down upon her. From this moment she knew that they were connected, at least in her mind.
Part of her disagreed with his assessment that love only grew deeper with time since she had seen the love slowly vanish from her parents as the time they were married grew longer and longer but she imagined that maybe their initial contacts had been full of passion and fire. Now passing glances became nothing more than blank stares full of duty and part of their role in society and within their marriage. Her mother fulfilled her end of the agreement and now her father simply allowed them to into cohabitation since divorce was frowned upon. "but if all secrets and habits have been revealed then what mystery is left to learn? How could love grow if there is nothing new in the relationship?" She asked but was not expecting an answer. These questions for far beyond their scope of knowledge as teenagers. But even as they spoke she felt jaded to the whole concept of love and doubted that anyone would love her beyond just that moment in time when they first laid eyes on her to the following morning when they awoke with a hangover and a stomach full of regret. It would just be easier to give into what she already knew was true and allow the pureblood scum she would one day marry to use her for their own twisted pleasures.
Alice smiled as he spoke and began to pull herself out of her deep depressing thoughts. She was one of those kinds of people that could get lost in her own thoughts and daydreams, it is what kept her awake each and every night. "you think that I am intriguing? What are you most intrigued by?" Her interest in the conversation grew since she wondered what she possibly could have done to peak his interests. She found him interesting since he was the most different person she had ever spoken to. He was not rehearsed and for once he was someone that spoke to her honestly. The boy was different and Alice seemed to enjoy herself in this moment in time. Those that would be swift to judge her would come and she would just chock it up to some sort of momentary lapse in judgement or claim that he forced her hand, all lies but lies were always told. Those flattering comments she mentioned earlier were generally a bunch of lies told since nothing good could be mustered. When she spoke she picked up on key words and one word stood out to her. The world yet it was simple enough but it held the future within it's meaning. For a moment she allowed her baby blue eyes to lock onto his as she gave him a soft and almost shy smile. "Interesting..." There was a brief pause as she let the words sort of sink in. "You use the word yet as if there was some sort of possibility that you could love me in some manner." There was another short pause before she quickly spoke again. "Of course that could just be me reading much deeper into a situation than need be."

The bloke shrugged his shoulders in response to her apologies. He wasn’t really all that offended or bothered by her interpretations of his actions. After all, everyone saw things differently. However, he supposed it was in her upbringing to act in such a fashion. “Everyone wants to put their best foot forward when it comes to others,” he stated casually. “Others just find more cause to do so…” Again Drew shrugged his shoulders. “I grew up in an open house hold, so honesty and loyalty are far more important to me than catering to the whims of others, and I guess that shows in how I act as well.” It was hard to imagine growing up in a different environment than he had done so. Yet, Drew wouldn’t have changed it all for anything in the world. He loved his family despite the annoyances. He wouldn’t change them and that showed more often than not as insulting or threatening any of his family was a sure fire way to set the Hufflepuff’s temper ablaze.
A chuckle slipped through his lips at her question of all secrets in a relationship being known between two people. “What makes you think you’d learn everything about a person? I’d think that’s near impossible, as you don’t know how a person thinks or predict how they’re going to act at every moment,” Drew rationalized with a small smile and shake of his head. “Life in general would be rather dull if that was the case. I’ve lived with my mothers nearly my entire life and I pride myself on being able to accurately predict that responses to things, but they still surprise me,” he finished with a shrug of his shoulders. “People aren’t two-dimensional.”
Leaning back in his seat, Drew merely arched a brow when the brunette asked what about her he found intriguing. “Where’s the fun in revealing that?” He wasn’t going to start listing or explaining things. Truly, it was boring and nonsensical to do so. Besides, it was fun to leave such a thing hanging—like a tease almost. Perhaps she would not think so, but Drew did not mind. He had shared quite a bit of information willingly thus far, certainly he was allowed to keep some of his secrets. After all, besides right now, the two of them had never really spoken much. There wasn’t really anything to say that such a meeting would occur again. Drew supposed many of the girl’s words and actions hinted at a desired second meeting, but it was uncertain yet if such a thing would actually occur.
“Yet as I do not know what the future holds. I’m not setting myself up for something I may not be able to fulfill. I can only live my life and see where it takes me,” he responded, his lazy smile still in place.

Alice had never met anyone like him before. There was no scolding tone when she misinterpreted his intentions, in fact he seemed just so casual about the whole thing. With her family there was always that underlying tone of disapproval or scolding and now she did not hear it in his voice at all. It forced her take in a deep breath, as though she had been holding it for several moments, and on the exhale her whole body just relaxed. Not like a complete breakdown where she slumped in her seat or anything but it was like she was able to let go as the pressure was slowly lifted up from her. An observant person would have noticed the transition but she doubted that it registered to him. Alice thought to herself that he was someone truly special and truly unique within her cookie cutter world. "It must be nice to grow up in such a household." She commented. Part of her just wanted to begin speaking of her own home life and how she hated every moment she was away from the safety of her uncle and grandmother. Her uncle was loyal to Alice, he was probably the only one in the Parker family and she respected his loyalty. In general Alice loved the quality of a loyalty in a friend but she would disagree if asked if any of her friends in the house of Slytherin were loyal to her. They were all loyal to themselves and Alice understood the quality of self preservation.
His response made her shrug her shoulders slightly. "I disagree... my father comes home every night and does one of two things... goes for a glass of firewhiskey in his study or yells at someone. He has done this ever day since I was a child and he has never faulted." She explained. "Your mothers might not be two dimensional but there are those individuals that are." And I will be stuck with one of those two dimensional people her thought that followed needed to be kept to herself. No need to plague him with that thought but she kept with her soft smile as though everything was alright. "I suppose you are right but I was just curious." She answered. Alice felt like the answer was that he was mostly intrigued that she was speaking to him when all rationale said that she should not do such a thing, at least that is what Alice interpreted. Then again she could just be wrong again.
A devious smirk appeared on her lips as evil thoughts began to come to light in her head. "So do you claim to be one of those kinds of people that are full of surprises? Then do someone to surprise me." As she finished her statement and waited for his response she felt a rush of adrenaline course through her body as her heart rate jumped for just a moment. This is what she wanted... to feel alive. It was better than waking up after achieve eight uninterrupted hours of sleep. The uncertainty of his next actions kept her on edge and kept her with that feeling she quite enjoyed. The question of what would he do next seemed to make her a bit more lively as she sat there.

Drew shook his head slightly at the girl’s response when she spoke about her father. He was sure there was something deeper to be read there but it was something out of his depth of knowledge at the moment. “See,” he said, making a motion with his hand, pointing, “that’s a daily routine. I can spout off something entirely similar about my own family and be correct. You’re still looking at surface stuff. It’s the inner stuff, where you’re close to the person where the surprises lay. Things they do that make you smile or shake your head … or just makes you entirely frustrated or angry,” he told her. “You need to dig deeper, and I’m guessing, and forgive me if I’m presumptuous, but I don’t believe you’re close enough to your parents to really feel that? And by close, I mean really attached to or love them unconditionally and not out of duty…” Boy, was he skirting close to the edge, however Drew had decided to take a chance and just sort of test the waters with the girl.
As he said, she intrigued him. Sure, it may have been because she was sitting there speaking to him, but that was only a start to it. If she wasn’t here, then there wouldn’t be something to kindle the spark, to keep it going. She had been interesting at the ball, and she continued to be so with just the little things she did. Drew could be observant when he wanted. He enjoyed watching people and picking up on small things—just as when she relaxed marginally earlier. He wasn’t completely sure why she had relaxed, but he had seen some tension drift away. It was something that made him question her family life, and he was waiting to see if she was lash out at him or respond in some other fashion.
However, her response to his defense of yet caused Drew to stumble. “Wait, what?” he stuttered briefly, the girl throwing him off. “No, no, now, I didn’t sign up for that. I said, I see what life throws at me, not that I go looking for things. If I surprise people or myself, that’s just extra bonuses… and currently, it’s throwing at me a pretty Slytherin girl who seems a wealth of surprises herself.” Time to regroup and turn things back.
“So what exactly do you want with me?” he decided to ask her. They had gone over a similar subject in why she had chosen him, but he didn’t think they ever covered what she was hoping to get out of this. “Friendship? Thrill-seeking? Crash-course-in-Boring?” Yes, Drew thought himself rather boring, but most people did about themselves. “Fling?—though I’ll tell you right now, I don’t do those. Boyfriend? Assuage Boredom?” he finished, listing off things from the top of his head. He kept his tone light, but he was still testing the waters, seeing what this girl was after. If this was a one time occurrence or something she wanted to happen again. Drew wouldn’t mind more meetings, as the girl was a mystery and there was something sad underneath in her manner he wouldn’t mind unearthing…

What did he mean by she was only speaking of surface stuff. Alice was quite sure that her father lacked any sort of depth to him as his motives had always been clear. Make a son, raise his son with the best values that any pureblood could have, further their place in the world through marriage, and inherit the family fortune on his mother's death. Simple motives of a simple man who only concerned himself with his own self. However his next words just rang so true. Without knowing her he managed to hit the nail on the head and she responded with a soft nod of her head. "Sadly that is the case but we can't all be blessed with good and strong relationships with our parents." She replied. A moment of envy as she realized that she was not as blessed as he was and she hated him in that instant for it but it was a passing emotion. Hatred for her parents always lingered after each and every comment that they made towards her but this time the emotion had felt shallow and she quickly let go of it. Besides how could she hate the way that he smiled and the way that he seemed to stumble when she tossed him the statement asking for some sort of surprise.
The way he stumble said to her that he was not expecting her to say anything in that manner. It was funny to place him on the spot for a moment and see how he reacted to pressure. He was not cool or calm but instead seemed to panic as he quickly ran through words trying to find something to get him out of the situation she had placed him in. "Pretty Slytherin girl who is a wealth of surprises... She repeated. No one had ever called her pretty and no one had ever said that she was full of surprises. Alice did not think of herself as the surprising type but he had been shocked by her statement so she accepted it and let him continue to pull himself out of the situation. Now it was her turn to be placed on the spot with questions about her intentions and what she was looking to find in all of this. Unlike him, she thrived under pressure and maintained her calm as she took a moment to think on his words and reach an answer.
"I am looking for something more than that shallow relationships I currently have." She admitted. "I feel numb to the world around him... like some kind of a ghost just going through the motions." For a moment she let him in to see something a bit more personal about her. Never in her life had she shared the fact that she felt empty to anyone but he put her at an ease where she did not feel judged. "I was never expecting a fling or boyfriend of some kind. I doubt that I will ever be loved but friendship is what I was hoping for. If you are not interested in friendship or getting to know me then I can just walk out the door like nothing happened." The idea of a fling was not below her since she believed that one day a pureblood male would use and abuse her in that manner. If that did ever happen then she knew she would be numb to it but she hoped that someone would love her for more than just a quick hook up.

A mild shrug was the only respond Drew gave when the witch confirmed his suspicions on her closeness with her parents. It really wasn’t something he relished in being correct on. It was hard for him to imagine not being close to one’s parents. He could understanding finding them annoying or not being as thick as thieves with one’s parents, but to be so distant to be strangers almost? He didn’t quite understand that. He really didn’t think Alice was close to her parents if what she saw was just the surface image of what her parents gave off. At home, with one’s family, one tended to see each other at their worst and best of times. They saw the different levels they had instead of the face they showed to the world. True, Alice probably knew her parents better than the outside observer, but it did not seem she knew her parents past the superficial layers either. It was not something Drew could fathom himself, so it was a topic he just let go of and stored away in his mind.
Drew had never claimed to be a smooth player. The Hufflepuff was anything but. True, it took a bit to truly shake him up, and even her putting him on the spot had not really unsettled him much. He was quick to defend himself, that was all. The Hufflepuff was far to laid back to really allow anything to ruffle his feathers to any large degree. After the lad had said his peace he had relaxed back in his seat, a picture of ease again while he turned the subject back on her.
“Sounds like you’re speaking a bit of blasphemy there in regards to your house,” he observed with a small smile, “being so candidly honest. Another surprise of yours,” he pointed out. However, he was silent as he observed her, thinking about what she had said. His smile, while lazy and carefree before, had taken on a bit of sadness as he listened to her speak. “You don’t think yourself worthy of being loved by someone?” he asked her then. “You’re just going to sit back and let things happen?”
“I hope you don’t,” he then told her seriously. “Don’t lose whatever spark you have right now that sought me out. Don’t let that fire go out, I like that fire,” he ended lamely. Drew just didn’t know how to phrase what he wanted to say. He feared that if she just surrendered then she would become what she had said: unworthy of being loved, and he did not see that in the girl in front of him. There was a strength there. She saw that she was lacking, and in this moment she was trying to rectify it.

Love and hugs were not used as methods of love in the Parker household. There was one occasion that she could recall where her uncle hugged her and she could feel his concern and his life for her. The moment was clear in her mind. It had been during the usual Christmas celebrations where she was forced to attend event after event during the few precious weeks that she had away from school. They had just finished with one family and had returned home from a very long day. Perhaps it was the alcohol her father consumed or the fact that he had been stuck dealing with people that he felt were lower than he was but his rage came the moment they walked through the door. His first person to take out this anger was on his wife and then swiftly to his oldest child and only daughter. Words that harmed and continued to break down the fragile wall that Alice tried to maintain and at first she tried to think little of it. The night wore on and eventually she excused herself when her father poured himself another glass of firewhiskey. It was then that her uncle came to her room to comfort her and he hugged her while Alice embraced the comfort of the only person who saw her. The only person who truly understood the pain that she was going through and try as he might he was still unable to save her.
"Yes I am and if word was to get around that I was then... I do not know how my father would react." She explained and hoped that he understood her request for silence. She allowed her eyes to make contact with his when he described her ability to be honest as a surprise. But sadness returned at the mention of her inability to be loved. "What other choose do I have? If I upset my father then I will be disowned and I have no where to go once I am kicked out of my family." The topic had upset her slightly and she felt angry that there was nothing she could do about it but yet he acted like there was something she could. Her angry did not show though as Alice remained like ice. "If you hope that I do not end up marrying whomever my father selects then what do you suggest that I do?"
Maybe she would find strength when she finished at Hogwarts and the world would become open for her to grow into. She could get a job and live in the smallest apartment she could afford and while her magical skills did not lack, she just did not image what sort of person would want to hire her. His following comment about her spark did give her a bit of hope. Thank you for the compliment." She replied and gave him a smile. Then for a moment she felt lost as to what should happen next but quickly she found some words to speak to him. "I know that this is a change of subject but I saw your last match against Slytherin the other weekend. You were very good in that match." Alice wanted to compliment him in some way and secretly she wanted to thank him for the strength and kindness he showed her but for now she could only compliment his quidditch playing abilities.

“Is being disowned, the end all of end alls?” he asked. Part of Drew wondered how much he could push the witch with his questions before she had enough and would leave. The Hufflepuff knew his questions and comments were rather forward of him, considering he hardly knew the witch. As before, he was basically speaking about blasphemy or something close to it in the pureblood circle. However, Drew had little experience or knowledge of that world. After all, his life was hardly as restrictive, but it was also more difficult too. While he had his family to rely on and fall back on, he was still making his own place in the world and not filling some cookie-cutter shape. “I mean, yeah, it’s tough to strike out on your own, to get a job and work for something. But that’s what most people do with their lives, and as they say, anything worth doing is going to be hard. You can’t expect it to be easy or just to fall into your lap without any work. I mean, yeah, it’ll be harder with no family to fall back on, but that’s when you either become stronger or you find other forms of support, such as friends who’ll help you through things.”
“Basically, what I’m saying. If you sit and do nothing, you’re dooming yourself regardless of what you think,” he stated. “If you want to change, you need to take the first step and do something.” He shrugged his shoulders. “But you’re in your, what? Sixth year? You still have a year and half to figure something out. You don’t have to throw yourself to the curb at this very moment in whatever you choose to do.” The lad still had no idea why he was even saying half of this, or rather why the girl was seeking him out of everyone at the school. It was rather strange, as really what did Drew know about any of this? As stated, he hardly worked for anything in his life. Yes, he understood the value of family and loyalty, so it was strange for him to imagine a loveless family life that the witch before him seemed to live. Plus, he certainly wasn’t striking out on his own, so to speak. True, he planned to live on his own after graduating and train to become an auror, but that seemed hardly extraordinary.
Drew blinked at her change in topic. “Uh, thanks?” he responded, somewhat hesitantly. “My team still lost though,” he then added with a slight smirk. Granted, it had been a close match, but Hufflepuff had still been defeated. While Drew enjoyed Quidditch, he didn’t live his life around the sport—although, some practices made him wonder otherwise at times. However, after graduating Hogwarts, Drew knew he wouldn’t really play the sport again, not to mention follow it much.

"Yes and no." She replied. It would mean the end of her relationship with her family and there was always her uncle that loved her. But even as a young girl she had been told that being disowned would be worse than death. No one would speak to you and all of your connections would be broken. If she crossed then bridge then it would have been burnt to a crisp behind her but at the same time it would be freeing. His words though reminded her that she was just a spoiled rich girl from a good family who did not need to work hard. Things were handed to her but Alice knew what hard work looked like since her uncle ran the family business since her grandmother was to frail to do it. She had witnessed how hard he worked and she had witnessed how hard her father did not work. "I never said that I expected that it would just fall into my lap." She corrected him. A bit defensive and it probably came off as rude but she wanted him to know exactly what she meant. She worked hard for her grade and those would get her someplace if she decided that her best option was to leave the family she had grown up with.
He was right about the timing though. A year and a half to make her decision and a lot could change in the course of a year. Her grandmother could die and the contents of her will could be placed solely on her uncle or solely on her father or even to Alice. The old lady was going a bit crazy in her old age and rash decisions could have been made when she was not in the right state of mind. But if Alice needed to get a job then she needed to decide on classes for her seventh year that would place her on the right path to becoming whatever it is she wanted to become. "I think I am doomed either way." She commented quietly. Doomed to walk the world as a numb pureblood wife or doomed to walk the path of someone struggling to survive and make enough to live on. Maybe he was right about having a support system of friends and she needed to seek those that were truly someone she could be friends with. It might be too late for friendships though since her reputation was very strong.
"Your team might have lost but the match was close." She replied in hopes that it would cheer up his spirits about the loss. Besides there were other matches and since there were limited teams Slytherin would face Hufflepuff again before the year was up. "Do you think we could be good friends?" She asked. he would be her first step towards true friends that would not abandon her if she decided to leave the pureblood world behind. She had already revealed so much to him that it would probably be heartbreaking if he said that he thought they could not. If he wanted to walk away from the conversation and forget her then she would understand.

Drew chuckled when she became defensive about the idea that things falling into her lap. “That right there,” he stated, “that spark, is why I don’t think you’re doomed. Somewhere inside, I think you’re willing to work for what you want.” Drew stood up, stretching his arms above his head as he did so. His shoulder muscles were stiff from a long practice. He really probably shouldn’t have slacked off as much as he did these days, but it was his last year. While other guys were probably trying to live it up, Drew was starting to live it down. He was shifting to start his life, and he had no idea how it was going to go. It was a bit worrisome. “The trouble is, I don’t think you know what you want.” The lad returned his arms to his side, pushing his chair in.
“That’s something you have to figure out on your own,” he stated before addressing her last question to him. He glazed over the topic of Quidditch, as while he played the sport, he did not live his life around it. “I’m always open to new friends. If you don’t snub me in the corridors, I think we’ll get along fine, as I don’t play those social status games. I’m a simple guy, and I’m trying to figure out my own life … unlike you, I don’t have another year to figure it all out. Speaking as such, I got studying to do,” he stated with a smile.
“Catch you later, Ally-Cat,” he tossed over his shoulder as he exited the café.
